Merry Christmas to Vassar Clements and Family. Thanks a million for inviting me to the concert at Randy Wood's place on December 13th. Although it was a "rainy night in Georgia," it was like a ray of sunshine to have the honor of spending such a great evening with such a fine group of musicians in such an intimate setting. Randy Wood, the man behind the scenes, deserves applause for having graciously hosted such a memorable and down home event. Looking forward to seeing you again at Live Oak in March. --- John G.

Dear Vassar - Guess I haven't kept up on things very well, and should have read the other areas on your web site first. I'm so very sorry about Millie. Please forgive my thoughtless comments in assuming she was still with us. I would have loved to meet her, she looks like a wonderful person and from what others have said on this site, I'm sure that she was. So very sorry for your loss. Anita Cornell

Still a huge fan of your's Vassar! I'm sure you don't remember me, but when you came to Spokane you went out to a Chinese restaurant with Charlie Schlesinger and me (I was the redhead, he's the New Yorker!) and then you played after a quick stop at a supermarket! You played with the Planet Lounge Orchestra. I also saw you in Spokane a second time, and just found an autograph from you. You told me to behave myself - I haven't!! The first time, your wife, I think you said her name was Millie, was having surgery (a carotid endarterectomy). I hope both she and you are doing well. You invited us to Nashville and I thought about calling your bluff and coming down! The first time, your sister and brother-in-law, or brother and sister-in-law, can't remember, were traveling in their RV and stopped by. They took a picture of several of us with you. I wish I'd asked them for a copy! Anyway, I still listen to you all the time - you're such an incredible musician words can't even describe it! You'll always be a legend! Take care and give my best to Millie - Anita Cornell

Mr. Clements... You have been an inspiration to me for many, many years, and are the reason I picked up the fiddle. I play mostly mando now but your creativity and originality still always inspire me and your licks always cause me to shake my head in wonderment. Thank you for sharing your amazing gift with us.

Hello Vassar. It's me again. Sorry we couldn't get together for the International Fiddlers Convention this yr. It was quite successful, with Some of the Greats from England {jazz fiddlers} and many from the u.s.a. Fiddle hell started at 11:45 Pm and ran 15 minutes with all the fiddlers playing faded love {sort of a universal tune}.The next Fiddle Convention will be held in Buxton England, June 11th-13th 2004. Then back here for Fiddle Hell at Macks Creek Mo. the last wk of July. Sure would like to talk to you about you playing one of these dates. You 'ARE' the man.

Over 20 years ago I walked over 20 miles in an ice storm to see you at the Crazy Horse Saloon...You got iced in and didn't make it until the next day....But you found out I had walked to see you play and you were nice enough to let me play your fiddle and you played Leather Britches on mine....I was just starting out....That was one of the highlights of my life....Thanks for taking the time.....PS...You are the only fiddler I know that noone tries to copy....And thats because you truly bring the notes out from within and that can't be copied....Good luck to you....Frank Ellis

Howdy folks. As many of you know, there were two sides to the life of vassar's good friend, musician John Hartford. There was his brilliant music side and his riverboat captain side. I was lucky enough to know John a little and our many conversations were always wonderful and interesting. On the Friday, October 3rd, during IBMA week, on the 1914-built riverboat The Belle Of Louisville, a tribute concert/cruise will take place and it will be great. First of all, the proceeds of the cruise will benefit two cancer centers, one in Louisville and one in Nashville. As you all know, John died from a long fight with Lymphoma in June of 2001, and his wife died from lung cancer 8 months later on his birthday in December of that year. The music line-up for the cruise will be sweet. First up will be old time musician Leroy Troy out of Goodlettsville, TN who has a record out on Rounder. The old timer that taught Leroy on banjo learned it from Uncle Dave Macon, that is his lineage. Next up will be banjo great and Bill Monroe alumnus Tony Ellis. Bob Carlin has brought together the John Hartford Repetoire Company for this concert. The band members of the John Hartford Repetoire Company are folks that all played with John at some point through the years; Bob Carlin, Mike Compton, Chris Sharp, Matt Combs, and Mike Shatz. Other guests will be Jamie Hartford, John's son and a musician in his own right playing with Billy Joe Shaver right now, and my good friend bluegrasser Katie Laur from here in Cincinnati. The cruise will leave port at 10am Friday morning and will come back into port at 1:30 later that day. The IBMA and Dan Hays has been more than helpful with this excursion. More information can be found at www.belleoflouisville.com. Two years ago I wrote an article about the time I spent with John Hartford and I have given it away free to whoever has wanted to publish it. As a result it has been published in England, in the British BLuegrass News, and in Australia as well, and originally in Gritz. Through the article and after Job's death I have gotten to know a bunch of John's friends from the riverboat side of his life, and it is quite an interesting fraternity. www.gritz.net/FTRjhartford.html Here is a good chance to hear the friends of Hartford play some wonderful music as you float down the mighty Ohio River on the 1914-built Belle Of Louisville, and all the proceeds go to charity. By the way, they are making up a very impressive poster for the cruise, which will be printed in Tennessee by the very famous Hatch Show Print Company. The Hatch Show Print Company was who printed up all those Bill Monroe playbills and other wonderful posters for the last 150 years. It will go for 10 bucks and will be a real collectors item, all for a great cause. The Hatch Show Print Company started printing posters in 1879; www.cmt.com/news/display/1476937.jhtml Hope to see you on the river. And before and after the cruise you still have time to check out the concert lineup at the IBMA, as well as the 24/7 pickin'. Hope to see you there! Thanks!!!!!! Derek H www.gritz.net

Midge, I got the CD's and I could have cried. They are wonderful and they brought back so many wonderful thoughts of you George and Vassar. I do miss you all and think of you often. How are all of you? Is Vassar do well? It really hits home how much I need to say that I love you all with the passing of Johnny Cash and John Ritter. "IN MEMORY OF MOM WHO IS STILL VERY MUCH A PART OF "VASSAR'S MUSIC." YESTERDAY, BEING TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2003 MY "MOM" WOULD HAVE CELEBRATED HER "74" BIRTHDAY. AS GEORGE AND I WENT TO THE CEMETERY TO PLACE NEW FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS, IT WAS ABOUT TO COME A DOWN POUR OF RAIN MIXED WITH THUNDER AND LIGHTNING. I LOOKED UP IN THE SKY AND MUTTERED ALOUD, MOM, WOULD YOU AND GOD PLEASE WAIT UNTIL I'VE CLEANED YOUR HEAD STONE AND PLACED YOUR BIRTHDAY FLOWERS IN THE VASES? IN A MATTER OF SECONDS THERE WAS A BURST OF WIND THAT LASTED FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES. I LOOKED UP IN THE SKY AND SAID "MOM, HAPPY BIRTHDAY & I LOVE YOU". ONLY MY "MOM" AND GOD KNOW OF THE BROKEN & EMPTY SPACE I STILL HAVE 5 YEARS LATER IN MY HEART SINCE JULY 12, 1998. WE NEED TO REMEMBER HOW FRAGILE HEARTS CAN BE AND HOW QUICKLY A LIFE CAN BE TAKEN FROM US. I WAS A MAMA'S BABY FROM THE START OF MY LIFE TO THIS DAY AND PROUD TO SAY SO. WHILE GROWING UP I CONTINUED TO OBSERVE MY "MOM" NOT KNOWING AT THAT TIME WHAT THE FUTURE WOULD HOLD AS WE NEVER KNOW. WHAT I DO REALIZE IS THAT SHE HAD SUCH A POWERFUL IMPACT ON MY LIFE THEN AND AS SHE DOES TO THIS DAY. ALL I HAVE IS MEMORIES FILLED WITH GOOD AND SPECIAL MOMENTS THAT I SHALL TREASURE OF THIS LADY I LOVE DEEPLY AND STILL SO VERY MUCH ADMIRE. THE BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR "MOM" THAT I LIVE WITH EACH DAY IS KNOWING THAT WHILE SHE WAS LIVING "I LET HER KNOW OF MY LOVE, RESPECT & DEVOTION. MOM, THERE'S A CARD I REMEMBER GIVING YOU ABOUT GETTING A LITTLE OLDER PHYSICALLY, BUT MENTALLY IT SAID "YOU WERE STILL TARP AS SHACKS". YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A HOOT! YOU ALSO MADE IT QUITE CLEAR THAT YOUR AGE WAS JUST A NUMBER AND YOUR'S WAS UNLISTED. I THANK YOU & GOD FOR HOLDING OFF THE WEATHER UNTIL I FINISHED WITH YOUR FLOWERS. I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH BUT I KNOW YOU'RE IN GOD'S HANDS WHICH IS THE BEST PLACE ANY OF US CAN BE! WITH LOVE, MIDGE

My wife, Julie and I saw Vassar at the Wildwood Springs Lodge show on August 31. We could not have enjoyed the show more. Vassar loves what he is doing and it shows. Not since I watched Stephan Grappely many years ago have I seen a fiddle played with such passion and raw genius. Vassar is a pure delight and a gentleman who spent a long time after the show talking with his fans. He is an inspiration. God Bless you and never stop playing that thing. Sincerely, Scott and Julie.

August 2003. Visiting our friends in Nashville and came upon Vasser's wonderful music making. We were delighted by Vasser's excellent musicality and technical 'expert-ease' ...and what a superb band. We felt priveleged to be receiving so much whilst paying so little. Many thanks.

Vassar Clements....wow. Vassar, you are the only fiddle player I have ever bought albums by. You have always been "the man". So, when I found out early this year that you played fiddle for Don Rigsby on a song that I wrote, Muddy Water, I have been going bonkers all year waiting to hear it. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever expected to hear the greatest fiddler on the planet play on a song that I wrote, but if the good Lord is willing it will happen on September 9th! I may just float on out of here. Thanks for all the many years of exceptional fiddling...you da man!

Vassar, last night I was was visiting with a couple of old friends of yours, and your name always comes up as usual. First was my mom, Joyce Pagett Pipkin, who celebrated her 80th birthday on Feb 27th 2003. The other lady was her sister, Lessie Pagett Burton, who just turned 85 on July 13th 2003. Both of them always talk of you fondly and wonder how you have been doing and what you have been up to. I'm slow, but I finally got a brainstorm and searched and found your website...duh. Better late than never. Mom wanted me to ask you if you remembered 117 1/2 Broadway in downtown Kissimmee ? They told me you always had some fantastic jammin' going on there. Sometimes I get the feeling I was born too late...lol. Mom was so sad to hear of Millie's passing. She so enjoyed looking at all the pictures here at your website. Both of these special ladies would love to know the next time you will be in the Kissimmee area so they can come and see you. They would love that. I met you around 1974 I guess when you played a gig next to the old Orlando Sports Stadium one night. I was the tall, lanky, 22 yr old kid standing next to Joyce when she, Aunt Inez, and her daughter Sylvia came to see you there. I'm 51 now, and no, I never did learn to play that banjo..lol. I just picked back up the guitar instead, and I'm still playing it. Okay, I'll quit babbling now. Just know, we here in Kissimmee still love ya and your fiddlin', and we would all love to see you again.

I worked at WRBL-TV in Columbus Georgia,in the early 60's. We produced the Jim and Jesse Crestview Mobile Home Show. We also produced a local music show featuring local musicians and talent stationed at Ft. Benning. As I get older the memory blurs but did Mr. Clements play with "Gene Jackson and the Rymthem Ranch Boys (aka Danny Atkins and the RR Boys)back in the early 60's or did he play with Jim and Jesse on the Crestview Mobile Home Show and my faulty memory has confused the facts. Thanks!

I have been a fan of yours since i first heard the album 'superbow' and even went as far as to have an artist draw the design of the mother of pearl from your fingerboard and had it put on my fiddle. I was playing vassar before anyone in missouri was, and i still love your music. Thanks for the lessons you didn't know you were giving me. Dale

Mr Clements, I was looking at the article about your fiddle and it said something about some lettering around both sides of your fiddle. If this is what's on the sides: VIVA FVI IN SILVIS SVM DVRA OCCISA SECVRI DVM VIXI TACVI MORTA DVLCE CANO this is what it's saying: "I was alive in the woods: I was cut down by the cruel axe. While I lived I was silent: In death I sweetly sing" And it surely sings a sweet tune under your finger tips. Keep up the awsome fiddling. Keith Herndon

Mr. Clements, Just a quick line to let you know that I first heard of you on Dickie Betts "Highway Call" lp. From then I was hooked. The first lp for my collection was "Hillbilly Jazz",Then "Hillbilly Jazz Rides Again". Never disappointed with either one. Now after visiting your web-site and reading about "Full Circle", I believe I'll purchase it also. I'll get outta here, but may I extend late condolences to you and your family to the late passing of your beloved wife. May my relationship with my wife of 6 years be as long and full of God's blessings that you had. A little wit before I go. May your art never wane, and from the late Roy Rogers(I think),"Have a great day, a better tomorrow, and may the good Lord take a likin' to ya'. Know something? Aloha Vassar! You probably wouldn't remember me, but we had a very nice conversation about 30 years ago (!) backstage at San Francisco's Boardinghouse. I was there for both nights when Old & In The Way was recorded - one of the musical highlights of my life! (In fact, I was in the backstage men's room with you, Peter Rowan, Garcia and David Grisman were warming up, prior to one of your sets. (That was almost better than the show itself!!!) Anyway, I just wanted to say "hi" and wish you a very happy 75th year!

Hey Vassar! It's a few days late, but I'm just getting to my computer now... HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It was an honor for us to spend the day with you, filming at MerleFest. And thanks for the outstanding version of every fiddler's nightmare - the Orange Blossom Special. It was so kind of you to play it for us for our movie. That whole set was something to behold! You're a true gentleman and I've been impressed with your generosity and humility since meeting you in February. Vassar, you're a blessing to the world and to music. Hope that there are 75 birthdays to come and that that fiddle is in your hands for every one of them! God bless you, sir. Sincerely, Zach

Dear Mr. Clements, I just came home from Merle Fest...again I was just bowled over by the magic of the event and the magician musicians themselves. I caught you just as you were getting in your car to leave on that beautiful Sunday, just after hearing you play "Sunday Morning Blues" with Roy Bookbinder, Patrick Sweany,Harris Brothers and Paul Geremia. Im afraid I forgot my manners and had my sunglasses on when greeting you- I was just dizzy with the opportunity to shake your hand and say 'Hey'. The last song you played with your pards just got inside me someplace that i didn't even know existed and tears rolled. The pickers were great but you with your fiddle, standing at the way back of the stage, were the shaman, wrapping the whole stage in ...i don't know what else to call it but magic light. Just wanted you to know. Thank you and Happy Birthday. Eric

I have been a Tony Rice fan since 1978. I ventured the drive to Charlotte NC to see TR, The Keel Experience, and some guy named Vassar Clements. Excuse me for my ignorance but you stole the show. The sound system was terrible but your poise on stage was remarkable. We gave Keel the benenfit of the doubt because my brother and I knew that if musicians of your and Tony's magnitude agreed to play on stage with anyone he was probably ok. Long story short....your album was in short supply that night but i picked up full circle at my local record store. Since then I have also picked up old and in the way 1,2,3, and old and in the gray. Bela Fleck is correct. There is vassar playing fiddle and then there is the fiddle. Thank you. tim kitchens

I had the wonderful experience of introducing my girlfriend's 8 year old Texas Fiddling son to Vassar when he was playing in Denver with Stir Fried this past weekend. What a gracious man! Marlon was privilaged to play a couple songs for PAPA, and after the sound check, Marlon went up to him and asked if he could look at "the fiddle" Well, Vasser just didn't show it to Marlon, he handed the fiddle to the boy, then reached into his case, pulled out a bow, and handed it to him,.. Marlon got to play Vassar's fiddle! The photos I took are priceless, and even though Marlon may not realize it now, so was this special moment with a truely wonderful human being. Thanks Vassar and Midge for being who you folks are. We have been blessed...

Howdy Vassar, Boyd Deering called me tonight concerning a project of his, and he told me about your web site and how fantastic it is. He wasn't exaggerating; it looks great. I was telling him tonight how much of a hero that you are to me, but I don't think I have every told you that myself. Even though we don't sound anything alike at this point, there was a time when I was a kid when I studied your fiddling under a microscope, and even though it's not obvious on the surface, you still have a big influence on my basic approach to things, and I just wanted to say thanks. I would love to get together sometime soon and visit. I'm sure you stay pretty busy, as do I (this month I have four concerts, sixteen seminars and workshops, seven rehearsals, an arranging job, and some private students; it makes me tired just typing it), but whenever we could hook up I would love to bring my wife Inge (who is an awesome swing rhythm guitarist in the style of Freedy Green) and play some tunes. Let me know if you might be up for that. Peace, Jim Wood

Midge, I enjoyed our conversation the other evening, our prayers are with your son at this time! Jesus WILL prevail!! You had mentioned getting passes so Marlon could meet "PawPaw", that would be great, don't know if he will have time but Marlon would love to play a tune for ya'll. Thanks for a great performance, and for continuing to inspire us fans. And thanks for being so generous of yourself to come out and greet people afterwards. It means a lot. Midge, you do a great job of taking care of PAPA and his fans. I got that photo signed of him and my boys. I'll leave you both alone now...at least for a while! Take care, John L.

Vassar, Eric and I certainly enjoyed our visit with you last week. You made us feel like old friends right away. The concert here at The Foundation was wonderful. We have had a lot of positive comments. We are considering adding a new drink to our concessions - "Vassarspresso" (triple strength coffee). Looking forward to seeing you again at Merlefest, when you and Eric will celebrate your 35th and 75th birthdays together. I'm not sure if I can remember which one is which though! Until next month. Vassar, I attended your show lat night at the State Theater. It was fantastic. I've always thought that the Old & in the Way album was the best Bluegrass aalbum ever. It was a dream come true to watch you, Peter, and David play the songs I've been listening to for nearly 30 years. Thanks for your passion and dedication to your music. Please tell the rest of the band what a pleasure it was! Carlos

Saw Vassar with Northern Lights a couple of weeks ago at the Bardavon in poughkeepsie, NY. Vassar was incredible as always. Vassar signed my denim Vassar shirt. He told me he doesn't even have one. I asked him how you were feeling Midge and he said you were a bit better. Glad to hear it. I also asked Vassar to send my regards and a giant thank you. Midge, two things. One, maybe you can throw Vassar one of his denim shirts. He seemed to like mine. Two I want to thank you once again, you are so very kind (you know what I mean)and so very enjoyable to talk with. I hope you are feeling better and back to enjoying your coffee and Pepsi. Vassar, I'll see you in a couple of weeks at the Town Hall in NY. I'll be front row Balcony enjoying the Old and in the Gray show. Midge, will you be coming along for the ride? Stay well! Best regards, Rich

Thanks Vassar for so much fine music over all these years. I was privileged to see the Vassar Clements Band with Doug Jernigan in Appleton Wisconsin in the late 70's. I sure love the sweet music you and Doug make together and was so excited when Deadgrass came out.....and there was Doug on the pedal steel!! Right now, I am trying to track down the out-of-print album "Nashville Jam". Never can get enough of this music! I have turned my wife into a fan as well and hopefully we can catch you live some time. Also, around 1990 my family and I saw you sit in with a bluegrass band at Mohican State Park in Ohio and you autographed a "Bluegrass sesssions" album for my fiddle-playin' step-daughter. Thank you again! God Bless you Vassar.....you are definitely one of the best! Sincerely, Mike Frithiof (a devoted fan)

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO EXPRESS THE MANY THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL COMMENTS MADE IN OUR GUESTBOOK, THE ENDLESS AMOUNT OF EMAILS WE'VE RECEIVED AND OF COURSE THE MERCHANDISE PURCHASED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AT VENUES OR BY ORDERING. I'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SPEAKING WITH SO MANY WONDERFUL AND KIND PEOPLE WHEN TAKING THEIR PHONE ORDERS. GOD HAS BLESSED PAPA WITH HIS ABILITY TO STILL PERFORM AT THE AGE OF "74" AND PLAY THAT FIDDLE LIKE NO OTHER. MOM STILL GUIDES ME DAILY AND GOD MAKES THAT POSSIBLE. WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL AND BLESSED FOR THE YEAR "2002" THAT IS ABOUT TO END AND MAY WE ALL HAVE A HEALTHY AND SAFE "2003." LET US ALL REMEMBER DAILY NOT TO TAKE ONE DAY FOR GRANTED. KIND REGARDS, MIDGE
