My heart is a bit heavy tonight, for I heard the news tonight oh boy. Vassar's fiddle on the album,"Will the Cirlce Be Unbroken" was soooooo special to me that I played that album so much that I wore out two albums, later with Old and In the Way I really appreciated his work and his playing. May the Four Winds Blow You Safely Home Vassar, Bless you and many blessings to your family.

My Vassar story I spoke on the phone with him once... Vassar played on my friends album last year. Boxrockers - Dance Around It - I wanted to upload a little video clip of him playing a couple of tunes back stage. I had to explain the whole internet music trading thing & he remembered how Jerry Garcia used to allow trading. He was all for it, but I never got around to doing it. I guess I need to find the time. anyway he was a great friend to many people & will be missed. look for that clip on Dimeadozen... His music will live forever!

His music touched so many of our lives down here in Athens, Ga. I'm so glad my ROCK N ROLL Husband got a chance to see Vassar play live here in town just a few short months ago. He truely broadened all our horizons.

I heard the news today on XM radio. I have grown quite fond of bluegrass music lately and soon learned of Mr. Clements accomplishments. I am saddend by the passing; yet glad to hear the suffering of this human body has passed. I will have a cup of coffee on the porch tomorrow morning, listening to the birds sing new tunes! God Bless!

He walked in peace and played with the beauty and fury of the God which he so loved and put his faith in. He helped me become the man I am. For this I will thank him in the heavens above when I get there. The choirs of angels are sounding much better tonight with PaPa hiding out in the back of the band and winking at Millie in between licks. Gratefully Forever, Mike Powel

Dearest Midge and George: God Bless You both for the loving care you have given to your Papa these last several months. I am ever so grateful to Millie and Vassar for giving me my first road gig in Nashville. The times I spent singing and playing sax with Vassar's Little Big Band will never be forgotten. He was so kind to me and nurturing of my talent. All the while I would stand in awe of the man fiddlin' next to me on the stage. Beyond the talent, it was his loving nature, his cute smile and the his wonderful personality and love for simply making music that I will remember so fondly. I love you Vassar. I thank God for you in my life and career. I am glad to know that we will one day meet again, God willing.

I've loved Vassar and his music since I was a young teenager in the early 1970's. His work on "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," all the stuff he did with the Grateful Dead and Old & In The Way, and his jazzy albums as leader REALLY stand out in my ears and my heart. I remeber seeing him live at The Palomino Club near my home in the San Fernando Valley of So. California. I was underage and snuck in that night. He was great, and showed me and my sister Andrea the carved headstock on his fiddle and his pipe. He was an awesome gentlemen-musician, and I will play his music until I hope to meet him in heaven. God bless you, Vassar! Drew

Vassar is loved by legions of music fans both young and old and will never be forgotten. I saw him perform with my father a few years back and Vassar was one of his and mine favorite musicians. Dear Midge, Family, and Friends: I was truly blessed to have seen Vassar play many dozens of times during my years in Florida. Vassar defined to me what is bluegrass music, and he is also the finest example I've known of what it means to be a good man. I flew back to Florida for Springfest last year hoping to see Vassar, but he had been diagnosed just before the show. I took comfort that I could spend the weekend with others who knew and loved him. Now, I can only wonder how the music can continue without Vassar to play it. My tears flow freely with you.

Dear Midge and family -- Your father was a musical giant and one of the sweetest people in what can be a very rough business. I had the honor and privilege of playing with him in backstage jam settings several times over the years and he never failed to teach and amaze me with his wonderful gifts -- not only his unique talent and skill, but also his quiet modesty and generosity as a man. Although there would be years between us seeing each other, he would always greet me by name like a home town neighbor. Of course nobody has ever fiddled up more and better music with so little motion and so much emotion -- he was just that good at what only he could do. I know it can't possibly measure up to your loss, but I already miss him terribly and will always honor his memory as an incomparable musician and a truly exceptional human being. Thanks for everything you've done to bring his beautiful artistry to a grateful world.

Thanks so much to Vassar! We have lost a wonderful man, but his music will be enjoyed for generations on end. I spoke with him once at a fiddle summit here in NY. In just the few moments we shared, what I discovered was a genuine man, a man who made me feel like my simple questions about his fiddle and his music were the most important questions of the moment. He really made me feel special. Vassar Clements was a great man, and a stellar musician. I know that he will rest peacefully, for he has does such great things here on earth.

Midge, George and Family. I was never lucky enough to meet Vassar, but I was lucky enough to hear him play many times. I always loved the sound of his fiddling....... (BTW.. the optical of his headstock crying on the web page is almost too much to take.....) Vassar, you will be missed forever... but we are all together, in spirit if nothing else…..."sometimes you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right..." Vassar, your work will live forever! You have touched so many people and you made the world a more beautiful place with your music!!!!!! We will never forget you! Midge, I am so happy that you had that moment….as painful as it was…. You were right when you said it was a blessing…. You are too kind to share all of it with the world! Peace be with you…. It is with great sadness that I heard the news of Vassar's passing today. One of the highlights of my musical career was to have worked and lived with him for a year when we were in the service in Germany. He will always be remembered for the beautiful music he made with his fiddle and his kindness toward everyone he ever met. I was the steel guitar player in the band we called THE SMOKEY MOUNTAIN HOT SHOTS and maybe we can get that group together again someday. My condolences to Midge, George and all of Vassar's family. I had the pleasure of meeting Vassar in 1979 when he hired me to play drums in his band. He has a wonderous soul, all of which could not possibly be expressed in one night of his performance. In the 4 months I played behind him, I experienced something new with every show. I often found myself lost in his music to the point of ignoring my own part. But, Vassar could esily carry the music where it needed to go. He was a huge inspiration to me. I miss him. God Bless Vassar Clements.

I did not know Vassar well:Vassar and I got to informally "jam" a few times, and yet I was as touched by his amazing persona as I was by the truly amazing magic that he could work with a fiddle. Playing music is fun, Vassar always made it SOUND really fun...the way he would draw out a phrase, or one of his silky "glisses" .....We have truly lost a National Treasure!

I used to work for Merl Saunders and had the pleasure of meeting Vassar a few times. My favorite was backstage at the Warfield in SF at Grisman's 50th birthday. I got to listen to Vassar rehearse with John Kahn, Peter Rowan, and Herb Petersen in a tiny room while the Grisman Quintet played upstairs. Amazing! I asked him to sign my poster and he did- it took three tries to get a pen that worked properly. Another highlight for me was the Suwannee Park show in '97 with all of Vassar's relatives in attendance. I tried to tell as many of them as possible what a treasure he was and what a great ambassador of bluegrass and jazz he was. He was the greatest fiddle player ever. RIP

Dear Vassar, I was introduced to your inspired fiddle playing on the first Old & In The Way album. The fiddle I heard there had a virtuosity and playfullness that was absolutely captivating and has brought me countless smiles over the years. This first exposure lead me to seek out many of your other albums and Nashville Jam remains one of my all-time favorites. The circle remains unbroken but it doesn't feel that way today.

Ah, powerful storms and winds plow over Floyd County today. The mountains are not at rest today. Our feeling of loss is overcome with gratitude, for how truly blessed we feel to have known you. We find comfort in knowing that what has been done, can never be undone again. You have sparked our hearts, and you will forever stay right here. With love, from Floyd.

About 33 yrs. ago you played at the Holy City Zoo in San Francisco. My husband and his band were on the same bill with you, and you all played a few tunes together. You were kind enough to show me your fiddle and the beautiful carving on it. I'll always remember that day, your kindess and the wonderful music. I'm sorry you have left this earth, but those wonderful memories will remain with all whose lives you touched. Lucinda

Like the beautiful Gypsy fiddle on the website, I shed a tear today for the passing of Vassar Clements....and I'm grateful for all the music he shared.....and the memory of a delightful dinner with Earl and Randy Scruggs and a group of us at Dr. John Morgan's house in Rochester, NY many years ago. Vassar was more than a living-legend musician - he was a great man and a kind person too. Thank you to the family who helped him through his final days and for helping with the music since his wife died. Thanks to Vassar for all the wonderful music he shared with the world. I can hardly find the words to express the feelings that are going through me at this very moment. We lost Jimmy Martin just a few months ago...and Vassar Clements is now following that same path. I know he'll be playing his fiddle with the best Bluegrass band up there in Heaven...but even so, we're going to miss him dearly down here on Earth. To his family and friends, my condolences. What an amazing musician he was...what a gifted man...Only the purest of hearts can capture everybody's attention and respect they way Vassar did. Bluegrass Music will surely miss his lonesome fiddle. There goes another angel...returning home. I love you, Vassar. We all do. God bless you. Esther.

I don’t have words to explain the medley of sad, happy, nostalgia, respect, admiration and again, sadness that I feel upon learning of Vassar’s passing. I feel honored to have met him and that his spirit and his music has had such a profound influence on my life. One year at the Spirit of the Suwannee music park Vassar saw me bouncing around on “moon shoes” (Like trampolines on your feet!) He asked “Well what have you got there?” I asked if he wanted to take them for a spin and he threw his head back and just laughed…he said he reckoned I was doing a pretty good job of it. Then when I asked he said “Why I’d be proud to have my picture taken with you little lady.” Who could ever forget Vassar's smile? Vassar emanated joy, love and kindness to all he met. That won’t soon be forgotten. I know there’s gonna be one knee-slappin-hop-skippin heck of a hoe-down in Vassar’s heaven tonight! Namaste dear ones...

I saw Vassar play live only once, about 15 years ago at a tiny little bar in New Hope, PA called John and Peter's. His playing was smooth as Tullamore Dew, and between sets he sat at the bar sipping a drink and warmly conversing with his fans. I'll go home tonight after work, pour me a glass of some good whiskey, and play "Kissimmee Kid" so all the neighbors can hear. Damn, you will be missed! "He was only a hobo, but one more is gone, leavin' nobody to sing his sad songs. Leavin' nobody to carry him home, he was only a hobo but one more is gone."

TURN UP VASSAR; ALWAYS MORE FIDDLE!! Those words on the "OLD and in the WAY" album live forever in my heart. That album and the high lonesome sound of Vassar's fiddle is what turned me on to bluegrass forever. I met Vassar in Westboro MA a few years ago, and I was overwhelmed by what a genuine down to earth human he was.He autographed a cd for us that night, and He and Peter Rowan brought me to tears with their music. Not since Bill Monroe himself, has bluegrass lost such a titan. Thanks for everything Vassar and Godspeed!!

i have a tear rolling down my face right now and it's the first time i've had a tear roll down my face because of someone in the music business passing in many years. rip vassar. you will be missed! my favorite vasser memory.... i had a backstage pass for harvest fest 3 years ago (the last year it was in atlanta) and while bavid bomberg played, i sat on something on the stage for his set. i had vassar on my left and one of the guys from mofro on my right. when david bromberg started using his willie nelson voice, vassar looked at me with his grin and said "listen, he's sounding like willie" with a chuckle. a few minutes later, bromberg did it again and vasar was like, "he's doing it again' fun times. while talking to vaser, i found out he had some great friends here in florence/muscle shoals. at harvest fest, i met a lot of the bands playing, but only got 3 autographs. the first was from vassar, the second was from david bromberg and the third was from rev. jeff mosier. all three on the same piece of paper. when mosier went to sign it, he saw vasser and bromberg and said with a laugh he wasn't worthy of signing it with those other two guys on it. vassar was one of the good guys.

AUGUST 16, 2005

MIDGE HERE……THIS IS A SAD YET GLORIOUS & BLESSED DAY. WHEN I PRAYED LAST NIGHT, AGAIN I ASKED GOD TO TAKE PAPA IN HIS SLEEP BUT GOD HAD OTHER PLANS.

PAPA DIED THIS MORNING AT HOME AS HE REQUESTED. I HAD JUST WASHED HIS FACE AND HANDS AND WAS TALKING TO HIM. AFTERWARDS I PULLED A CHAIR UP BESIDE HIS BED AND WAS HOLDING HIS RIGHT HAND. GEORGE WAS IN THE KITCHEN.

I TOLD PAPA I LOVED HIM TILL THE END OF THE EARTH AND THAT IT WAS OK TO LET GO. I SAID MOM HAS WAITED 7 YEARS FOR YOU TO BE LAID TO REST BESIDE HER.

AS I WAS STILL HOLDING HIS HAND HIS BREATHING STOPPED AND I CALLED GEORGE FROM THE BABY MONITOR’S WE’VE BEEN USING IN THE HOUSE SINCE HIS ILLNESS TO BRING ME THE BLOOD PRESSURE MACHINE AND SP 02.

I LOOKED AT THE CLOCK AND IT WAS 7:20 AM. WE CALLED HOSPICE AND THEY WERE AT THE HOUSE IN 20 MINUTES OR SO AND PRONOUNCED HIM DEAD AT 8:25 AM………

IT WASN’T AN EASY DECISION TO AGREE THAT PAPA DIE IN OUR HOME, BUT I DID PROMISE BECAUSE IT WAS PAPA’S REQUEST. WITH GOD’S INTERVENTION IT HAPPENED BECAUSE IT VERY WELL COULD HAVE HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL LAST WEEK. WHAT A POWERFUL GOD WE HAVE LOOKING OVER EACH AND EVERYONE OF US.

THE IRONIC THING OF IT ALL WAS THAT BEFORE MOM DIED IN 1998 PAPA WAS HOLDING ONE HAND AND I WAS HOLDING MOM’S OTHER HAND. SHE CROSSED BOTH OUR HANDS ON TOP OF HER STOMACH AS IF TO SAY “HANG IN THERE TOGETHER AND EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT.” SEVEN YEARS LATER, GOD BLESSED ME WITH HOLDING PAPA’S HAND AT THE END OF HIS LIFE. WHAT A BLESSING AND A GIFT!!!!!!!

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE INCOMPLETE AT THIS TIME. HE HAS ALREADY BEEN TRANSPORTED TO:

    BOND MEMORIAL CHAPEL
    1098 WESTON DRIVE
    MT. JULIET, TN 37122
    (615) 773-2663

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL OF THE SUPPORT DURING PAPA’S ILLNESS.

KIND REGARDS,
MIDGE CRANOR

I saw Vassar live twice in February of '00(?) playing with a band called Stir Fried; once at the Towne Crier and once at the Tin Angel. The thing that struck me the most was how humble he was. Easily the oldest and most experienced musician in the group(which included Buddy Cage and Commander Cody at the time, and also Tony Trischka at some point), he just hung back in the middle and played; if he wasn't fiddling, he was plucking the strings quietly. At the Tin Angel we were late(Thanks, God!) and ended up sitting along the side of the stage. I spent the entire show looking up at him, within arm's reach. At one point between songs he looked down at down at me, gave a little grin and said "How you doin'?" It made my night. I got to talk with him a little bit after the show as well. My heart goes out to those who were much closer to him and who are feeling his loss more intensely. Fare you well, and Godspeed. Keep the faith Sean

One night before a concert in Chapel Hill, NC, I was walking in the darkness to the auditorium where I saw Vassar play for the last time. As I was walking by teh building. a sudden golden bright flame burst and I could see Vassar lighting his pipe to have a quiet smoke before the show. I left him to himself, even though I wanted to thank him for everything he gave me. So now I have a chance to thank him again. Safe passage, Vassar, thanks for the laughs and the music you left for us.

I was fortunate enough to learn from an older generation who the finer musicians were and where the seeds of our modern art come from -- Vassar Clements was a big part of that. Perhaps the best (inadvertent) compliment he could receive was an occasion a few years ago when playing some of his music in a roomful of friends. When one person inquired who he was, another answered, "He's this old-time, original guy... He started a lot of what is played today." And he kept it going until the end. And it keeps going.

Empty your mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return. Each separate being in the universe returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity. If you don't realize the source, you stumble in confusion and sorrow. When you realize where you come from you naturally become tolerant, disinterested, amused, kindhearted as a grandmother, dignified as a king. Immersed in the wonder of the Tao, you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready..."The savior needs angels up in heaven now they sing 'round the great, white throne." Go in peace, good man. Love to you and joy to those that remain in your honor.

Dear Friends,

On August 16th 2005 at 7:20 am Nashville time, the angels in heaven stopped singing for a moment, as they heard the most beautiful music approaching from a distance - the high lonesome sound of Vassar Clements' fiddle.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of this truly wonderful and beautiful man whose purpose in life on Earth was in spreading love and happiness to people, both through his music and through his generosity and light of spirit.

Vassar indeed has touched the lives of so many of us, and we can all count ourselves as blessed to have been witness to the musical genius and kind-hearted nature of this great yet humble man.

It is a great testament to a life when those whose paths you crossed hold you up as an example on how to treat others. Vassar's guestbook is that testament and shows how incredibly loved and admired Vassar was on this Earth by both those who knew him personally and those who knew him only through his music.

I would like to thank Vassar's daughter Midge and son-in-law George on behalf of all of us that loved Vassar for the great love and care they have shown him since the passing of his wife Millie just over seven years ago. Selfless and devoted, they not only took care of Vassar emotionally and physically, but also jumped in and learned the music business so Vassar could continue to play for all of us around the country.

I picture Vassar and Millie in heaven, reunited in the love they shared that transcends all things, him playing while she dances.

Thank You Vassar - God Bless You. Rest In Peace.
