These are the guestbook entries for 2007.

DECEMBER 31, 2007
“GRATITUDE”

Dear Family, Friends, Musician Friends, Promoters And All The Wonderful Folks Out There Who Love and Purchase The Music:

I just wanted to take this opportunity to convey a few things before the “2008 NEW YEAR” is here. Although, this year has been difficult in many ways such as it just being the 2nd year anniversary of PAPA’S death (August 16th, 2007.) Also, the passing of my Mother-In-Law on June 2nd, 2007. No doubt, I’m sure each and everyone of you have lost a family member, friend or acquaintance and my heart and prayers go out to you. The loss can surely be overwhelming at times.

As for myself, I’ve dealt for the last 4 to 5 years with Aortic Valve Disease. There have been months of fatigueness, shortness of breath and tightness in my chest due to having Aortic Valve Disease. Thankgoodness, I didn’t pick up the habit of being a smoker. My Aortic Valve is narrowing which causes the blood flow to be a huge problem and at some point, I’ll need to have the Aortic Valve replaced with possibly a mechanical valve. Although, my cardiologist says the results of my October echocardiogram still remains to be “moderate to severe but not critical.” I return in April for another echo and will then make a decision regarding surgery unless an emergency situation arises first.

Many of you have called, emailed and lifted up your prayers for me and I want you to know how much they are all so APPRECIATED. So many of you through having known MOM and/or PAPA in friendship or in a business manner that I’ve dealt with have been concerned about me. Though, I realize some of you I’ve met and spoke with on the phone, there are others I didn’t have the chance to meet or speak with. Through PAPA you became aware of my heart problem. However, I want YOU to know that it’s been a gift and a blessing to have had a working relationship for those of you in which I did. For some there will be a dedicated friendship that will forever last. God closes one door only to open another and He says if we stay in faith that He will bring us divine connections.

PAPA, MOM and all our loved ones that have gone on before us, yet including ourselves will have a place to spend eternity if we give our heart, mind and soul over to God.

All of us are God’s masterpiece and we by no means are a finished product, for God is still working on each and everyone of us, yet we have to be at peace within ourselves. So many of you have contributed in one way or another to “HELP ME” and make that divine connection.

You have all had somewhat of a part in my life to help lead me to the source of salvation, promise and hope to have a home in heaven, perhaps without even realizing it. Especially, after MOM’S death and then PAPA’S death 7 years later. My faith and reassurance became more apparent after losing MOM and PAPA to cancer. Life is just too short and PAPA in the years gone by has voiced to me that we all have to make a judgement call according to the heart and what God expects or we will not have a home in heaven.

To all of you, I say “GOD GIVES US THE TOOLS TO BE VICTORIOUS,” and the rest is up to how we choose to use those tools. Belief and confidence in God is the hope that keeps us from despair and I hang on to that everyday.

So, from me to you “MAY THE NEW YEAR OF 2008 BRING YOU GOD’S BLESSINGS OF GOOD HEALTH, STRENGTH, SERENITY, TO BECOME WISER IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE AND BECOME A BETTER PERSON.” It’s always a work in progress!!!

THANK YOU FOR HAVING BEEN A PART OF MY LIFE………..

BEST WISHES,
MIDGE

Hi Midge, Thank you very much for the update. Vassar is one of my favorite musicians of all time. I really miss him and can't wait to hear the CD. Every recording he was a part of has his special touch. He was very unique and always keeping me smiling when ever I play his recordings. Take care and I hope you have a blessed upcoming New Year also!! Steve Rice

Hi Midge, Bless your sweet heart. You are in our blessings everyday, as usual. We think and talk of you often especially in our travels. Tim's song "Vassillies Lullaby" on his Bang Bang CD is becoming quite popular and he enjoys explaining the title to people who don't know what the term means. Tim is such a sweet, kind and thoughtful guy and I'm glad and blessed to have him as my Brother. Thanks for the message, it was very thoughtful of you to share the latest information with all of us that care about you and George. Please just pick up the phone and call if you ever need anything. We're one BIG extended family always! Peace and much Love to us all, Danny (carterbrothersband.com)

Midge, My order arrived today! Thank you so much. I was thrilled to death, as was my wife who happened to be visiting on our son's birthday. The extra surprise was a melancholy treat that warmed my heart, I cannot wait to play those special discs; my time today is limited with the holiday and Henry's birthday. I just wanted to let you know that. The discs came in good condition and could not have been more timely. Thank you once again and I'm already thinking of my next purchase. Have a wonderful, serene New year! Warm regards, Mike Sullivan

Dear Midge, Thank you so much for Old And In The Gray! And also thank you for the tribute to your father in the form of DVD and CD's. Your Father looks like a very happy man with quite a twinkle in his eye. I just walked in the door from visiting friends in the Catskills (we had 9" of snow) so I have not had a chance to look or listen yet- but I wanted to get right back to you. We played the Old And In The Way CD while I was visiting and there were a lot of smiles and toe tapping. Let me take a listen and a look and get back to you on your thoughtful gift. I have so enjoyed chatting with you. What a delight to make a connection to such a kind person and so unexpected. Happy New Year to you and your family. I wish you good health and happiness and ease of spirit. Sincerely, Nancy

I am saddened to find that Vassar has passed away. He was one of my musician heros who I had the privilege of meeting once and getting his autograph. I was working as a security guard at a hotel in Durango Colorado when I found out that Vassar and John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) were staying there. I met John in the lobby and we had a great chat. I waited for Vassar to come out of his room and got impatient so I knocked and he came to the door in his boxer shorts, lol, Both he and John were gracious enough to sign my copy of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" cd. John signed it also. Its one of the treaures of my collection. Vassar is the finest fiddle player I have ever heard. We miss you Vassar.

Vassar brought a bright light to my corner of the world as I'm sure he did for a great many people. I was heart-broken when I heard the news of his passing. I remain forever remiss that I never went to see him perform, but the live tracks of those shows will warm my broken heart for a long time comming. PEACE-B-with you always

I am a new fiddler and a new fan of Vassar's. My kids are grown and I've always wanted to play. Needing some direction, I recently purchased his instructional DVD. I love it and will keep at it until I get it....or die tryin'. His matter-of-fact attitude and generosity of his character come through beautifully. I only hope one day to pass on what I learn from Vassar to other "young" fiddlers.

Gone but never to be forgotten. An inspiration. I only heard about our losing Vassar today when host Jim Blum mentioned it on FolkAlley.com. Just randomly swung by the site again -- to see what people had written 2 years ago when Vassar was in his last days on earth. I was at a jam last week with 5 fiddlers! Being a banjo player, t was fun to listen to them collaborate on tunes, and then a couple of them said something to the effect of, "Vassar would have done it more like this, but we can't even get there from here!" I just smiled...thinking of how dear we hold our mentors in bluegrass music... Blessings.

Midge, it was 10 minutes to midnight here in the middle of America and I just read your email regarding the two year anniversary of you Dad's passing. Your love for your parent really show through in your words. Ironically as I read I was listening to John Hartford's "Aereo-Plain".......your Dad sure did some fine playing on those tracks. That album was my introduction to the Kissimmee Kid. I never got to thank him for all the wonderful music he enhanced and created. His music enriched my existence but I know he had a much more profound influence on your life and you must miss him dearly. I did not know him but I am certain that he must have been very proud of you. And since I cannot thank him, I will thank you. Sincerely, Mark Hedger

Thanks for keeping this guestbook going its really nice! Yesterday I watched some video of Vassar -playng "Midnight Moonlight" with Old and in the Gray out at Rockeygrass a few years ago. It was some of the best fiddle playing I have ever heard- Vassar was in great form and a good mood and at the end of it he got a long standing ovation at which time someone came up to the video camera to tell the videographer person to turn it off- No video-taping please!!! But I HAVE THE VIDEO OF THAT GREAT MOMENT!!! Vassar played his way into the hearts of millions of fans and musicians alike I first heard him with Old and In the way back before that first album at my job in Ambler Pa at the Temple University Music festival (TUMFI)I didnt play fiddle back then but man I loved that music and especially the fiddle playing. i heard many greats at my summer job there - got to play with Vassar a couple times when I played with Del McCoury Band and Lynn Morris years ago- what a thrill!!!!He could read my thoughts and [play harmony on top immediatley! Amazing! You know what??? there was and will be only one Vassar Clements- but You all know that already!!

We remember Vassar everyday and especially today Aug. 16, 2007. I'm so glad that over our fireplace hangs a framed drawing of Vassar's hands playing his sweet fiddle (we purchased it at Merlefest one year) It's so nice to have all of his cd's and recorded memories like the photo we have of him & my husband, Jim Vipperman, of Vip's Violins in Mount Airy, NC, made at "Ziggy's" one year. Our big 17-yr-old Siamese cat named Vassar passed away last year, too - but what a legacy Vassar Clements has left around for folks to enjoy! He will live forever in our home and in our hearts. Vassar was a true innovator and musical genius. He was also one of the nicest, most genuine guys you could ever hope to meet. I was lucky enough to be able to play as part of his backup band on occasion and that was a real honor and just plain fun as well. AUGUST 16, 2007

VASSAR CLEMENTS- 77 YEARS YOUNG
DOB: APRIL 25, 1928
DOD: AUGUST 16, 2005
BORN IN: KINARD, FLORIDA

IT IS NOW AUGUST 15, 2007 AND AS TOMORROW APPROACHES, IT WILL BE 2 YEARS SINCE PAPA'S DEATH. THROUGHOUT THE YEARS WHEN I'VE ASKED HIM "HOW WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR LEGACY TO BE REMEMBERED?" HIS REPLY WAS "JUST REMEMBERED."

HE'S NO LONGER HERE ON EARTH AMONG US IN BODY, BUT HERE IN SPIRIT. MANY OF US CONTINUE TO PLAY AND LISTEN TO HIS GOD GIVEN TALENT OF SUCH VARIOUS TYPES OF MUSIC HE'S LEFT BEHIND, AND SUCH A GIFT. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK EACH AND EVERYONE TO TAKE THE TIME FOR A MOMENT TO EITHER LISTEN TO A SONG HE PLAYED FIDDLE ON, OR PERHAPS TO TAKE THE TIME AND SEND ME AN EMAIL OR EVEN SIGN THE GUESTBOOK ON THE WEBSITE.

YES, PAPA FORGED A REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST TALENTED AND VERSATILE FIDDLE PLAYERS. YET, HE WAS JUST A PLAIN SIMPLE HUMAN BEING JUST AS YOU OR I.

PAPA, MAY YOU AND MOM CONTINUE TO "REST IN PEACE." YOU'RE IN MY HEART EVERYDAY!!!!!! I LOVE AND WILL ALWAYS ADORE YOU BOTH!!!!!!!

Hi Midge, Just got back from New Mexico and I was greeted by my order including your "special gift." Thank you so very much. It was a very fitting gift as we were returning from a reunion with my Mother's side of the family where we held a service for my Father and spread his ashes on the hill overlooking the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in Los Ojos, NM, where we had spread my Mother's ashes two years earlier. This Grotto is very special to my family as it overlooks the little church where my Grandparents were married and restated their vows 60 years later. I am looking forward to watching and listening to your Father's Memorial Serice. I am sure it was a very speical occasion. Also, thank you for the commendation on the neatness of my order form. Believe me when I say, it paled in comparison to the superb packaging you did on my order. Best Regards, Michael

Hey, Midge, How y'all doing? My shipment arrived today. I was quite thrilled to find the Special Gift you enclosed. My music collection indludes everything from bluegrass to opera and everything in between. Now the only addition, at this time, I simply must have, is a CD of Irish, yes, Irish, not Scottish, bagpipes and I have found the site. I was quite thrilled to find "Old and In the Way" and at such a price! I had been searching for the CD for quite some time. It was also noted you carry Norman Blake, an excellent musician and quite reticent. Despite his desire not to be bothered during a concert, my son did get his autograph so many years ago. At this time I have not played the Vassar CD not the DVD for the package just arrived today. As money allows I will surely order more from Vassar's Music. What a site! Regards, Mary Ellen

A treat and delight to listen to. There's no better way to communicate love than through music. Love of music and the ability to create it is what i appreciate most in an artist, even more than the song itself. The work that Vassar did on the 'will the cicle be unbroken #1' album was my introduction to his music and and as far as I'm concerned he couldn't have asked for a better forum to 'strut his stuff' ... so to speak. A fine musician and a wonderful person, Im certain. I only wish i could have known him and his music alot better. My sincerest condolences.

Dear Midge, I got busy and almost forgot to send my thank you. I placed an earlier order for 2 CDs. You not only filled that, but I got a fine t-shirt. But I also got the memorial service recording and photos and program for your father. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed those. Very meaningful, and it made me appreciate Vassar and your family even more. I shall share them with friends. Thank you so much. Bill

In 1995 I and two other fiddlers from Canada were in Nashville recording a new CD.Vassar and Buddy Spicher came to the studio to watch/listen.The engineer suggested that Vassar and Buddy play a guest cut on our project.I said we could never afford the cost but Vassar said "Buddy let's do it" and they did.No Charge. A highlight of my career. There's a picture of us all on my website. www.keithross.net

Hi Midge, Your package arrived safe and sound. I am completely overwhelmed by what awaited me inside. While I did not know Vassar personally, I feel that I do now. I cannot thank you enough for sharing the CD's and DVD from his memorial serivce; tears were streaming down my face as I listened and watched. I have a brief story to share with you, in the hopes that you too will see an incredible parallel. My aunt, Gertrude Elion ( we all called her "Trudy") was a famous scientist, winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1988 (click on her name above to see a web page about her.) She was a great lover of opera, but could not sing a note of music herself. When she died in 1999, I organized a memorial service for her. I had one simple ground-rule for anyone who wished to speak. I asked that they speak about the wonderful PERSON that she was, and not her many scientific accomplishments. The resulting service was everything that I had hoped (and I think that she would have hoped) as people from all over the world told funny and touching stories about Trudy. The service closed with Amazing Grace (sometimes I think that is the "National Anthem" of North Carolina) performed by Leslie Ritter (amazing vocalist) accompanied by Scott Petito on solo electric bass guitar (an unusual but stunning arrangement!) Not exactly opera, but I know she would have loved it, as she recognized and appreciated musical virtuosos from all genres. Needless to say, not a dry eye in the house! As I listened to the CD's you sent, I couldn't help feel some strong parallels. People talked about Vassar, the person. THAT is what was so special. Great love and many funny anecdotes (I loved the comment about him playing fiddle in his PJ's, as I sit here in my bathrobe typing!) There was a warm human being and person behind all those fiddle tracks that I have heard over the years. Thank you for letting me get to know that person. I am also moved by the work that you are doing to keep his memory alive; this is SO vitally important! His music will speak for itself and always be remembered. But you are going beyond that to assure that the memory of Vassar, the man, also lives on. Don't stop! Thank you again for your wonderful "something SPECIAL." Jon

Midge, I received the package on Saturday. Thank you very much. I am touched that you would share something so personal with me. I am not a huge fan of Bluegrass, and had only known of your dad as a result of Old and in the Way, which I first bought in the early 70's. It wasn't until watching and reading the material that you sent that I realized he was an integral component of a lot of the music I've enjoyed during the last three decades!! I enjoyed Full Circle very much. I remember twenty-five years ago telling a friend that Old and in the Way performed Wild Horses better than the Rolling Stones did. I wonder if I'll come to enjoy your dad's cover of I've just seen a Face, and Yesterday more than the Beatles versions. Hmmnn? Again, thank you for your generosity. I can't wait to explain who Vassar Clements is to those who inquire when they see me in my new shirt. Best wishes. Dennis

Hi Midge- The package arrived today. That was quick!!! Thanks. What a great surprise it was to receive the DVDs in addition to the CD that I ordered. Vassar was a "Special" person, to say the least. I was very close with Vassar and your Mom, being Vassar's agent for a number of years in the 80's. One of my favorite life memories is a trip we took to Alaska. He played Anchorage and Fairbanks. We took the train between the two cities through the Alaskan wilderness (including Mount McKinley National Park.) Breathtakingly beautiful. I remember Vassar teasing me most of the trip. He knew I wanted to see bears and eagles in their natural habitant. I saw plenty of bald eagles (they're easy to spot up in the sky) but bears were more elusive..I guess they'd hear the train coming and skadaddle away from the train tracks. Nonetheless, I kept my eyes glued to the wilderness in hopes of catching a glimpse of a grizzly. If Vassar saw that my attention had drifted from my watch he'd point out the window and say, "Hey look..a bear." Of course he was just pulling my leg and getting a laugh at my expense. Man, I loved that man. He was always so welcoming and encouraging to the younger musicians just getting started. I can't tell you how many times he'd invite the opening act into the tour bus to pick a song or two, despite wanting to get moving on to the next engagement or to the hotel. And you know those young musicians cherished those moments. They're probably still bragging that "I've picked with Vassar Clements." Thank you so much for sending the DVDs. I can't wait to see them. I was disappointed that I was unable to attend the service due to my own health issues (I suffered..survived!!!!..a massive stroke about a year before Vassar passed and I was in no condition to be able to travel at the time. Thanks again. Be well and God Bless!! Robert

It has been 7 years since I recorded "Dead Grass" with Vassar....it was a joy to work with him and the rest of the gang. We had a wonderful time. Vassar loved my singing and said to me one day, "I'm gonna see if George can sing Broke Down Palace with you". I said "George who?"....Vassar said "Jones". My heart stopped! I was raised on George Jones and could not believe he would even suggest it. Unfortunately George was in L.A. attending the Grammy's, and won a Grammy that year. What laughs we had during the sessions at Bayou Recording. Thank you for allowing me to re-live a precious moment with you on this day....Gwen

I had the honor of jamming with Vassar once back in the 70s. He did a show in Ames Iowa -- I didn't go, as much as I wanted to, as I was recovering from minor surgery and didn't feel great. About 10:00, the banjo player in the band called and said Vassar was willing to jam with our band (I played bass) and did I want to come down. I would have to have been at death's door not to respond to that. We got together and jammed for probably three hours, then I drove Vassar back to the Holiday Inn (he said he could sleep on the bus). I still have a picture of him and our fiddle player checking out each others' instruments (I don't recall if it was "Throckmorton" or not). I felt pretty rotten the next morning, but I've never lost that memory. Thanks to Vassar and all his colleagues for the great music over the years...

I have listened to Vassar's music for more than 30 years and have always been facinated with his style. I got to meet him about 5 years ago when our little bluegrass gospel trio went to Nashville to record. The studio hired some musicians to play on 5 of the tunes and we were overwhelmed, humbled starstruck and amazed when Vassar showed up to play fiddle. Meeting Vassar and watching him work has been the highlight of this Louisiana boy's musical career. What a legend. He is missed greatly. Thanks to the family for sharing him with the world.

Good Morning Midge, George and Family, I received your package yesterday, and what a blessing it was. We viewed the DVD and was blessed by that, then we listened to the CD'S and the more we listened to, the better it got. What a wonderful tribute to your dad. My son has been a great fan of Vassar all of his life and his two young boys know about Vassar. My youngest grandson has started to play the fiddle and about a year ago I found a copy of Vassar's instructional video and bought it for him. He is still trying to figure out how Vassar did the Mockingbird (he is only 11.) I sat next to Vassar on a flight from Nashville to Charlotte about 2 years ago. I had never heard of Vassar Clements (he seemed almost happy about that). We talked non-stop about our love for the music from a violin, steel guitar, and saxophone. He was to play in Asheville and then at the Visulite in Charlotte. I walked him to the baggage claim, where he was to meet an event producer. At that time he invited me backstage if I came to the Visualite theatre. I went, of course, and got to sit next to him on a couch backstage. It was an unforgetable time. Both on the plane, and that night, he cordially invited me to his house outside of Nashville. I had every intenion of taking him up on that. I'm not the starstruck type; I just loved his aura and easily pictured myself in a rural paradise with him on the front porch. I wanted to learn from him about life, and music history. Some of his marvelous music history in the Nashville area, he shared with me on the plane. It was fascinating. I'll never forget that plane trip and our discussion. I'll never forget Vassar, a man I thought would never die. Rest in Peace, Vassar David Sims

He was the world's fiddle player. We got to do a tour with him as his back-up band and it was incredible. Each night standing on the stage trading licks with this man was the zenith of my "career". At times I was astounded and scared by what came out of that fiddle. Scared I might be found out to be not good enough to even carry his case, but he made us all feel at home for the short time we played together. He was the greatest. Plus he was a real gentleman and funny as can be with some great stories. I'll never forget riding in the back of a van, each of us in his own sleeping bag, cracking jokes and telling stories to each other. Those are memories I will treasure forever.

I first met Vassar when I was about 17. That was about 8 years ago. I play the fiddle in a band with my brother and sisters called Jypsi. Vassar was one of the most humble people I've ever met. He showed me a lot of stuff on the fiddle, and I had the opportuity to jam with him quite a bit at the coffee house in Hermitage. I will never forget that. He definitely had an impact on my life. Thank you Midge, Thank you for your email...researching further I've narrowed my search to a few albums/CDs which include Old and In The Way recorded May 1973 in San Francisco. Will The Circle Be Unbroken, participation on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1972, produced by William McEuen, and Full Circle. Further, I want to listen to a few more such as Livin' With the Blues, Northern Lights & Vassar Clements, and Vassar's Jazz Golden Anniversary. As you already know your PAPA had a gift with music and music brings people together, therefore his legacy continues for others to enjoy! More importantly, the Arts are vital in schools for our children; it helps them to think and grow creatively and have fun, I think. I have a niece in 12th grade that seriously plays the violin and dedicated to win a scholarship to attend some musical college up North. Awhile back, her mom brought a previously owned smart violin that she really enjoys. Soon I will share with her Vassar's inspiring story and cherish for his Fiddle. Again, thank you for the inspiration! Most sincerely, Roxanne

MOM AND PAPA: TODAY BEING VALENTINE'S DAY I THOUGHT OF YOU BOTH THROUGHOUT THE DAY. IT'S STILL SO DIFFICULT TO BE WITHOUT EITHER OF YOU ON A DAILY BASIS, LET ALONE ON A HOLIDAY. MOM, YOU KNOW I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT YOU SOME TYPE OF JEWELRY AND PAPA I WOULD HAVE MADE YOU A PINK CAKE WITH HOME-MADE MARSHMALLOW CREME ICING THAT YOU SO LOVED. THE BOTH OF YOU ARE MY GUIDING ANGELS, SO PLEASE CONTINUE TO WATCH OVER ME....ALWAYS, YOUR DEVOTED DAUGHTER.

Midge, very generously, shared Vassar's Memorial Service with me. I finished listening to it recently. It was an uplifting and special experience to find out what kind of man Vassar was and how much his friends and family loved him. There are many great musicians in this world. That was previously all that I knew of Vassar. It is much rarer to find a man who is both a great musician and a great human being. Midge, thank you so much for sharing the memories of your father with me.

A friend of mine introduced me to Bluegrass music through the Circle Album in the early seventies. Later when he had a son, about 1975, he named him Vassar after your dad. He resides in Hollidaysburg Pa.

I just wanted to say that I remeber Vassar from when I was 7 years old and had seen him with my Mom and Step Dad at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Vassar had spent the night with us back in Portola Valley and the next day we drove him to the airport but on the way I had fallen asleep on his lap. Thanks for the fond memory. Just spotted this video on You Tube with caption "Vassar Clements along with The Del McCoury Band on All Star Bluegrass Celevbration II DVD. Recorded on April 2nd 2003 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN". God how I love that tune and Vassar's fiddle playing. Vassar, we miss you! Midge: THANK YOU! Sorry this is tardy but the Holidays got the best of me. Thank you too for including the funeral service. What a blessing that was to listen to. I have really enjoyed renewing my friendship with the Aereo Plain album. Your Papa's flat pickin on and harmony on "Holding" as well as the rest are just great. Thank you Midge. Johnny

Midge, I'd like to share a belated thanks with you for memorial mementos that you included with my order. I've enjoyed and appreciated your Papa's work for a while, and I was touched to receive them. I can tell that your Papa meant the world to you, and very much appreciate what you shared with me.

Many years ago I interviewed John McEuen when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was playing at Knott's Berry Farm in Calif. Don't remember the year, but John had re-joined at the time. We talked about the band, of course, but he was most excited about the album, "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" I came across the album recently and grabbed it. That's the first time I heard Vassar and was blown away. For years I was MC and stage manager at a bluegrass/country western festival. I thought I'd heard the bluegrass fiddle. Well I had...over and over. When I had the chance, I searched for his web site. When I learned he had died, it was as though I had lost an old friend that I'd just met. What a magnificent talent. But, thank God, although it's small comfort we have his recordings. Keep the site and his memory alive. Thanks.. TL

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken II" featured Vassar on many of the cuts and It's where I first heard him. I was blown away by his versaitility. On cut 10, "Sitting On Top Of The World" he performed some licks that literally dumbfounded me. What a talent he was.

It's a tough call, but I'll take the white one....I checked them out on the site. I don't want to give people the impression that I attended the 75th birthday celebration, even though I would have given anything to have gone. Thanks again for everything...I can't wait to get my new CD's and t-shirt. Best Tim

Hello, my name is Denise Nicolai and my father, Dewitt Carter, used to play with Mr. Clements years and years ago. My dad is 75 years old and he played with Mr. Clements in his early 20's in Kissimmee, FL. My dad lives in Georgia now but has always told us about Vassar Clements. For Christmas this year, I decided to surprise my dad and I bought him two of Mr. Clements CD's. He loved them and became quite emotional because he knows Mr. Clements has passed away. He wanted me to see if I could find a CD with the song of Mr. Clements titled, "Me and My Fiddle." My dad said they used to play that song and it was one of Mr. Clements favorites. I have searched all the CD's on your website and did not see that title. Do you know of this song and if so, is it on one of his CD's? I would love to get that for my dad. Thank you for your time. Denise

Midge, Thanks for the kind reply. A neat side note is that I will be in Kissimmee this weekend for their chili cook off. A friend of mine has a restraint on the park by lake Tahoe and we will be on the deck watching the crowd. My father as well was a double first cousin. We had always though it quite unique but on second thought it may be more common than you would expect. Have a wonderful week and good luck! Keith

Hi Midge, It was a pleasure talking with you today. We seem to share many similar views, especially our love of bluegrass music. I'm sorry that you didn't have any more of the John Hartford Aereo Plain CD's left. I looked again tonight through my old record albums but it seems I definitely lost my copy. If you happen to come across another copy I would be extremely grateful if you could let me know. My favorite bluegrass artists were John Hartford, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and of course one of the very best, your Dad. I was just sitting here listening to your Dad's album just titled "Vassar Clements." It is a Mercury record and it says all selections were arranged by Millie Clements which I assume was your Mom. It still is in great shape and has the original sleeve inside. A treasure I will definitely not part with. Thanks again for your time Midge. Our Moms and Dads will be in our hearts and minds forever! God bless, Dave

Just a word to express my appreciation for what Mr. Clements has contributed to bluegrass music and to let you know that I have spent many hours listening to the wonderful music of Mr. Clements and all of the other artists that he played with. If only I could be half as talented. Thanks again for all the wonderful hours of enjoyment.

I had really enjoyed Vassar Clements playing a number of times. Mostly in Live Oak, FL. I have also seen him step in and play with some bands that were a real surprise. What a wonderful musician and huge influence. My question is where in Florida was Vassar in his youth? I saw that he grew up here but what city, town, county? It is just driving me crazy. My bet is Ocala or somewhere in-between there and Jacksonville. Please let me know. Thanks in advance for your time, Keith

Dear Midge, When I arrived back on Nantucket from my visit home for Christmas I was greeted by the wonderful package from you! What a gift, I was obviously only expecting what I had ordered but the dvd's and the t-shirt are amazing additions. Thank You! The dvd's are beautiful, what an amazing way to remember someone who is so clearly worth remembering. I will share these with all of my bluegrass friends so that they too can travel back in time and celebrate the entire life of your wonderful father! Vassar played in the Chandler Music Hall in Randolph Vermont years ago, long before I was into bluegrass and my mom, who works there, has a signed photo above her desk thanking the hall and wishing everyone the best. It's a great memory because I knew the photo long before I really knew who your dad was and it now means so much to me. Thanks again, David McMeekin

HE WANTED TO BE "JUST REMEMBERED." A THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO PURCHASE HIS CD'S, MAKING GUESTBOOK ENTRIES AND ALSO THE KIND REMARKS MADE OF HIS GIFTED TALENT IN PLAYING "THROCKMORTON", HIS FIDDLE. AFTER HIS DEATH IN 2005, THERE HAVE BEEN AND STILL ARE VARIOUS FESTIVALS/PROMOTERS, FELLOW MUSICIAN'S WHO TO THIS DATE CONTINUE TO HONOR HIM. NO DOUBT, WHEN THIS IS BEING DONE, PAPA IS LOOKING DOWN WITH HIS KODAK SMILE FOR EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU. I'VE RECEIVED NUMEROUS EMAILS INDICATING SOME OF THE TRIBUTES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN INTERVIEWS AND EVEN LATELY SONGS THAT HAVE BEEN DEDICATED TO HIM. JUST TO NAME A FEW OF HIS MUSICIAN FRIENDS. THERE HAS BEEN JOHN McEUEN, JEFF HANNA, PETER ROWN, DAVID GRISMAN, TONY RICE, SAM BUSH, DAROL ANGER, MIKE MARSHALL, NORTHERN LIGHTS BAND, KRIS KRISTOPHERSON, JOHN COWAN AND RICKY SKAGGS. BE SURE AND CHECK OUT THE 2005 "2 CD SET TONE POETS" PRODUCED BY DAVID GRISMAN. THERE'S A SONG SELECTION GRISMAN AND TONY RICE PERFORMED CALLED "BLUES FOR VASSAR." ALSO, RICKY SKAGGS AND KENTUCKY THUNDER PERFORMED AN INSTRUMENTAL CD IN 2006. ONE OF THE CUTS ON THE CD IS CALLED "MISSING VASSAR." A SIMPLE THANK YOU TO THESE FOLKS JUST DOESN'T SEEM ADEQUATE. PLEASE KNOW THAT IT SURE IS UPLIFTING TO, FAMILY, FRIENDS AND THE MANY FANS PAPA CONTINUES TO HAVE. LAST BUT NOT LEAST AN "APPRECIATIVE THANK YOU" TO LAURA AND CHRISTIAN FOR THE OUTSTANDING JOB THEY CONTINUE TO DO ON THE WEBSITE. I COULD NOT CONTINUE WITHOUT THEM.
